Welcome to Pisa
The history of Pisa has got its roots in the 4th century B.C., when Pisa was an Etruscan settlement, that faced the sea. In the 2nd century B.C. the Romans built Portus Pisanus. After the end of the Roman Empire, this was a port town of great importance for the Gothes, the Longobards and the Carolingians too. A further development transformed Pisa, in the 11th century, into one of the most powerful Italian Maritime Republics, together with Genoa, Venice and Amalfi.
For most part of the Middle Ages, the powerful Pisan navy guaranteed to the town the supremacy of the West Mediterranean Sea. It was just in this period that the buildings which made famous the city began such as the Duomo, the steeple and the very famous Leaning tower. Moeover, here, in this historical city of the Tuscan region Galileo Galilei, the famous astronomer, physical and mathemathician was born.
There are a lot of historical buildings that deserve to be visited in this splendid town of Tuscany: amongst the most important we can remember, in addition to the leaning tower, inclined after a little ground partitioning, the monuments of Piazza dei Miracoli, also known as Piazza del Duomo; no wonder if it's been including in the UNESCO human heritages since 1987. Here you can admire the centre of the Pisan religious life, exactly known as Miracles for their beauty and their originality. Amongst the various monuments, we must remember, for example, the St John's Baptistery and the monumental necropolis at the North of the piazza; moreover, out of Piazza dei Miracoli, the visitors can go to the Palazzo della Carovana (the Caravan Palace) in Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights' Square) and the Palazzo dell'Orologio (the Clock Palace), several museums and so on. |
