The Historic Downtown
Lucca is one of the most famous and visited Tuscan city, and it's been visited by a lot of foreigners people for ages; some of them chose it as their second residence. The city is surrounded in a sixteenth-century walls perimeter 4 Kms long which are their symbol. The historic centre inside keeps the peculiarities of the ancient city-state with its narrow streets and its particular squares which its little mediaeval houses and its Renaissance palaces appear on. The first traces of human inhabitations lead to the Ligurians. In fact, Lucca was probably founded on an island of the Auser: all could be confirmed by the Ligurian-Celtic origin Luk, that designates a marshy place. But just the people, between the 7th and the 6th century B. C., were the firts people that contributed to increase the demographic, economic, civilian expansion of the territory. |
