Chiesa di Santa Maria dello Spasimo
Located in the Arab neighborhood of Kalsa, one of the oldest part of Palermo, the Church of Santa Maria Spasimo is a beautiful monumental complex that stands out for its ability to convey peace and serenity to the visitors. Rich in history, the church acquired great importance for the whole community of Palermo, arrichiendosi among other things, a masterpiece of inestimable value: the Torment of Sicily painted by Raphael, depicting the dismay of Mary before Christ collapsed under the weight of the cross. After the transfer of the monks, the structure fell into disuse and the then Viceroy of Palermo Don Ferdinando D'Ayala gave it to Philip V King of Spain in exchange for concessions and favors, the painting remained in Spain and is now preserved at the Museum del Prado in Madrid, but what makes it unique structure is the lack of coverage, a feature that makes the church in question a truly impressive. |
