Ideal for a snack during a break from work in the office, but suitable for any occasion, the Smørrebrød is probably one of the most popular foods of the traditional Danish cuisine. Very substantial, the Smørrebrød, (which literally means bread and butter), is a sandwich (open) that can be stuffed with a number of different ingredients that vary according to personal tastes. Mainly consists of a slice of rye bread buttered which therefore constitutes the basis for the most varied fillings: between the various examples of Smørrebrød can be found many kinds, including the Dyrlægens natmad (ie the snack Midnight Vet) that, topped with a layer of foie gras (Leverpostej), a slice of corned beef and a slice of meat aspic, in addition to raw onion rings and garden cress (a plant easy to grow and a pleasant taste) is a substantial snack and nutritious taste delicious. Again, between the countless other examples, the smoked eel may constitute the main ingredient for another type of Smørrebrød. Scrambled eggs and topped with sliced radishes and chives make this a real Danish food delicacy, is ideal for a snack any time of day. One type of greedy Smørrebrød is undoubtedly the Leverpostej: bacon and sauteed mushrooms placed on rye bread ingredients are able to delight the most discerning palates during a snack or at other times of the day. Another type of greedy Smørrebrød is undoubtedly based on roast beef: thinly sliced, the beef is covered with Remoulade, a sauce of French origin that makes it very tempting and appetizing. This is then decorated with a sprinkling of grated horseradish and roasted onions (ristet). The Ribbensteg yet another type of Smørrebrød involving the employment of roast pork, thinly sliced, (of course served on rye bread), which are seasoned with sweet and sour red cabbage and decorated with a slice of orange giving so the Smørrebrød a unique flavor and distinctive. Still, the rullepølse consists of a roll of spicy meat on a slice of rye, for a lighter snack, but still delicious. The Tartamad, however, is yet another type that involves the use of raw minced meat with salt and pepper topped with raw onion rings, grated horseradish and a raw egg yolk. Other hearty and delicious type of Smørrebrød is undoubtedly based on smoked salmon (Laks) that served with shrimp and decorated with a slice of lemon and fresh dill, Smørrebrød is the ideal for those who love the flavors of the sea. Still, for those who always loved dishes of fish, is not to be missed is the Stjerneskud literally falling star: white fish steamed in one half of the bread, the fried fish on the other half, then covered it all tasty shrimp and decorated with a dollop of mayonnaise, red caviar, and a slice of lemon are ingredients that make him irresistible Smørrebrød.
